Why are convicts not taught money management in prison?

It seems like this would help get on the right track once they leave prison. My brother-in-law has been incarcerated both in Arkansas and Alaska but does not manage his money well at all.

1. Prisoners learn to hustle not manage money.
2. Because in prison the method of exchange is cigarettes and sex.
3. Are single mothers on welfare taught money management and birth control?
4. Are you going to give them a ledger for managing the spending on crack, prostitutes, and weapons? Really? you cant RE-habilitate someone who has never been Habilitated in the first place....
5. Classes are usually offered but it is up to the inmate to initate the action. And GRIPS is totally wrong on the cig issue. Almost ALL state level prisons do no allow smoking anymore.
6. They won't have money when they get out. They should be taught a trade before money management.
7. Umm why aren't common citizen or government thaught money management, last year alone people have spent 5 times the GDP and are highly in debt.
8. I agree with you man. When I was younger I rebelled for a little while and dated a guy that was once in prison. He later on took me for all I was worth because he could not keep his own crap straight. Now I have a daughter by him but I had his rights signed over and don't have to worry a thing about him anymore. But you are right I think that they should be taught valuable things in prison while there. We the tax payers are paying for something right, why not a little education for them.
9. If you've been in prison a few times, money managment is not your biggest concern.
10. Bad money management , like alcoholism, first must be recognized by the victim. He/she has to know they have a problem and be determined to overcome it. Prison may not have classes on such things but they have a library and high school courses, possibly even some college classes. If you get money management training for prisoners you may as well look at every other kind of social skill and put it on the list with it. Everything cannot be resolved in prison and often nothing can. People have to learn to solve their own problems sooner or later.
